Gin Rummy Strategy

Treat the Discard Pile as Information

Taking a discard is strong when it completes a meld, but it tells the opponent what you are collecting. If the discard only helps a little, drawing from the stock often keeps your plan hidden.

Keep Flexible Cards

Middle cards are often more flexible than edge cards because they can extend runs in two directions. A 7 of hearts can work with 5-6, 6-8, or 8-9, while an ace has fewer run options.

Discard From Weak Islands

A high singleton is usually painful deadwood. If a queen or king is not near a run and not paired, it is often a good discard unless the opponent clearly wants that rank or suit.

Knock Before the Opponent Catches Up

Do not chase gin forever. If your deadwood is low and the opponent has taken useful discards, knocking can protect your edge before they complete a bigger hand.
